An Story of Unexpected Generosity: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor

During 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book lodging upon arrival, but when I arrived, a big convention was happening and every single youth hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover that airport, not like the one back home, closes around the clock. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on public transport and found myself drifting towards the casino, reasoning I could pass the evening in an establishment that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, but as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more people who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place as a woman saw me loitering in downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I shared my situation and immediately she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: one sandwiches she had from her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe and safe to spend the night.

Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I operated under a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious about things like that. As a dad now, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up study at ANU, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of human compassion. It is my wish life has repaid her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
