Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
