American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by climate and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending north to the city of Oakland, California.
