Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," the governor stated when pressed about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he noted that any determination is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
Rising Profile as a Political Adversary
The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his social media accounts and championing a proposition that would expand the party's House seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. Duffy disclosed intentions to withhold government money from the state and threatened suspending the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," he said, after a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in fatalities and casualties.
Newsom's office noted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had earlier announced he was blocking additional funds from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office retorted in a recent comment countering the secretary's comments. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Future Prospects
A recently conducted poll found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an average of about one-third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an mean of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The thought that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
