Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He contested the legal system and justice won.
A couple of months after receiving a 27-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last seems jail-bound.
Anticipated Jailing
The found-guilty plotter – who's been living under home confinement in his estate while a set of court processes and appeals play out – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the next few days, amidst increasing talk that he will be sent to a infamous high-security penitentiary.
Historical Remarks on Inmates
During Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the far-right former military man exhibited scant compassion for the country's inmates.
“Why should we offer these lowlifes a easy time?” he once mused. “They should just get screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to finish behind bars, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”
Prison Destination Debate
But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, a group of four this week inspected the complex in an obvious effort to prevent the high court from sending him there.
Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he expected the septuagenarian politician to be jailed in the coming fortnight and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal issues – the outcome of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign – signified it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells accommodating four dozen detainees: “It's practically one meter squared per prisoner.
“We spoke to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the awful meals,” added the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
Lucas is not the sole person expressing views ahead of the ex-leader's predicted incarceration.
Penning in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to see “the largest wrong in its history”.
“It represents an wrong that erodes the hearts of countless Brazilian citizens,” he stated.
Varied Public Response
It is possibly accurate due to the substantial support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. But his predicted jailing has also warmed the feelings of numerous individuals who think he ought to be jailed for conspiring to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and even plotting to have him murdered.
The lawmaker, a congressman for the incumbent president's political party, commented: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain dignified handling – but respectful handling behind bars. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the severe handling of prisoners, had abruptly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that basic rights were not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a jail to learn what conditions are really like,” he said.
“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, degrading treatment”.
Potential Prison Conditions
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now holds about 14,000 prisoners, his expected location looks to be a close prison for police officers and other “particular” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although still a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the spectacular official residence, about a short distance away.
As per reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a television and even a cooler in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his family,” information indicated.
Partisan Reactions
The lawmaker denounced the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his future in the {
