The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind assisted us verify the video.
Our team is analyzing images and video posted this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated was based on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
