The British tennis star achieved the most notable success of his career by rallying from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Even though he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph signifies Norrie's initial victory over a sitting world No 1.

"Huge. So big for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the latest English competitor in the record books to beat a global number one. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest win of my professional life, my initial victory over the top player and likely the most confident athlete in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also ended Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight Masters 1000 wins, which marked the top run of performances in the young champion's early career.

The top seed looked to be progressing easily to success early on as he sailed past the first set. However, Norrie slowly worked himself back into the game by executing with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into lengthy, physical points. His persistent steadiness and consistency slowly made an impact.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz served well but he found it challenging to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The rising talent appeared notably uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for most of this year, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, Norrie offered his opponent minimal unforced errors, keeping up his reliability, physicality and penetration all match while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to move inside the baseline and strike effectively.

After dealing for a long time due to a significant left forearm injury and difficulties with his performance, the tennis professional dropped as low as 91st globally this season. Having reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam fourth round after that, this triumph reinforces the veteran's improvement as he aims to return to the top 20 and even higher. Alcaraz, in spite of his extraordinary success, is yet to solve how to deliver his top form on indoor courts.
