As any significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
