The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
