The Ultimate One-Hour Party Strategy: Stress-Free Entertaining for Last-Minute Company
In this festive season, while there's so much going on which the most lively people might occasionally long for a calm respite of January, it is all too easy to neglect details. I'm sure I'm not the sole one who's once been surprised awake while at my desk because of an inquiry by a friend asking, "What time are we expected us tonight?" Fear not; if you are absent minded, and just likely to make spontaneous plans, I have your back.
The Key to Memorable Gatherings
Above all, though I cannot stress this sufficiently, if you have organized for months or just a short while, the greatest parties tend to be the simplest. All anyone expects is engaging talks, a drink to enjoy, and sufficient food so they do not end up gnawing their arm during the bus home. Unless you're Jay Gatsby, no one expects professional bartending, gourmet catering and entertainers.
The best parties tend to be the most basic. However, a theme helps to mask the reality you've only thrown the event on on the way back from the office.
Picking a Style to Direct Your Shopping
That said, a theme works well for disguising that you have only put this thing on on the way from the office. And by theme, think of something like the holidays. Going slightly focused (Swedish-style festivities, for instance, featuring spiced drink, aromatic cocktail, fish snacks and crispbreads, Nordic beats playlist; or Latin American celebration, with ponche navideño, chilled brews or tequila drinks, along with heaps of corn chips, tomato dip & green spread, with upbeat tunes on the stereo) can narrow your choices on the upcoming grocery run.
Smart Purchasing for The Event
At the shops, choose a couple of drinks (an alcoholic option for those who do, one not for some prefer not to) plus some nibbles that fit your concept, then buy a generous amount within your budget, instead of stressing over providing too much choice. Nothing looks more welcoming and as festive as abundance – I'd consistently prefer to arrive by a sink full of cold bottles with affordable sparkling wine than a small serving of swanky champagne. (Chuck in some bags for chilling, as well; you'll find never sufficient ice.)
Drinks & Punch Simplified
If you feel the need to demonstrate skills and serve a mixed drink, then mix in advance a sizable amount in a pitcher so that you're not stuck faffing around with preparation when it's time to enjoying yourself. Once the party begins, ask a significant other or volunteer to watch the drinks and top up when needed till it's finished. Apply the same for the soft drink; guests appreciate to be given a role while socializing so they may experience a share of goodwill.
For large-batch drinks, whatever mix you choose (they abound online), skip any recipe too sweet – children present need their own drinks – and should you have one, place a bottle of bitters nearby (avoid adding any in the mix since they are unsafe for those abstaining from drinks entirely). Put in some work with how it looks so that the non-alcoholic option isn't perceived neglected; it doesn't take a short time to add several pieces of citrus to the punch.
Food That Work Without Effort
Personally, I'd skip the store-bought platters of "party foods" available in supermarkets at this time of year; they seem fancy, and often involve heating things up (if you must opt for these, be aware that all guests secretly likes toasted bread or cocktail sausages regardless). I'm convinced you can't beat a couple of large dishes with tasty snacks (salted is universally liked), and, assuming no dietary restrictions, some of those big and excellent value containers of mixed nuts often sold in the international aisle of supermarkets, along with a few ready-to-eat olives for color (it's best to avoid to find stones in your pot plants in the future).
In case, like my mum, you don't consider snacks proper food, a single sizeable chunk of tasty cheese served simply alongside crackers and some artfully draped grapes always looks painterly. A plate featuring preserved or ready-to-eat salami or salmon arranged on it (just one sort, unless you're wealthy), alternatively a nice ready-made pie, like those available at delis during festivities, proves more filling, and you really won't fail with homestyle slices of flatbread, because they don't need additional preparation.
