Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Denver Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

Jokic was hurt towards the end of the second quarter following an accidental contact with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of the big man, and he promptly collapsed to the ground grabbing his knee.

The 30-year-old, who tops the NBA this season in boards and assists, recorded a score of 21 points and eight assists in the contest before suffering the setback.

Jokic will have an MRI scan on the following day to assess the severity of the problem.

"Right away, he understood he was hurt," commented Denver coach Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Whoever who suffers an injury, that's tough to see, especially somebody as special as he is. More information will come tomorrow."

"The team will adjust together. Clearly, at this moment, I am focused primarily about Jokic as a person and the letdown of experiencing a situation like that."
