Two Victims Named in the Providence Campus Attack as Law Enforcement Continue Manhunt for Gunman.
The pair of scholars who died in Saturday’s mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter persisted following the release by Rhode Island officials of the sole person of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow on social media, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, family members said.
His name was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.
What Happened
Nine other people were hurt in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man detained in a raid at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our city”.
The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a police source reported to the news agency.
Law enforcement that raided the inn found two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured
Of the nine hurt, one student was released from the hospital, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.
An educational institution, a independent school in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Further Tributes
Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”
