What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
